V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.
Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, and screenings of V-Day's documentary Until The Violence Stops, to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities.

Invisible to
Envisioning, and Challenges Ahead: Notes of an Asian American Activist
As this nation
rapidly moves toward a "minority majority" and emergent groups move out
of invisibility in our workplaces, communities and even the White House,
can we re-envision the new face of America in these contemporary times
that have been labeled "post-Civil Rights," “post-racism,”
"post-feminist"? Writer and activist Helen Zia, the daughter of
immigrants from China, shares her personal observations and stories to
explore these dynamic times and how each of us can challenge old beliefs
to bring diverse communities together for social justice and our common
humanity.

Salt Lines
- March 30th @ 8:00pm
|
Pride Alliance, SEE, Terpoets,
Community Roots, AASPIRE, Feminism Without Borders, Terps for
Choice, SOUL, and the Jimenez-Porter Writers’ House Present

[March 30, 2009
8:00pm-9:00pm
Dorchester Hall
Basement Lounge]
In honor of woman’s history
month, Salt Lines comes to UMD for a spectacular event!
These women
represent some of the strongest and most respected talent coming out
of the international Poetry Slam circuit.
This verbal
quartet will storm, sing, slam, and sling salt into the eye of all
that has ever silenced voices meant to be heard.
Their
celebration is one of being basic to the earth as salt. Necessary,
life allowing, wound stinging, and let’s face it, tasty. A salt line
is a ring left on a hat or heart or sleeve inspired by exertion or
labor. So, don’t be surprised if they inspire you to work up your
own sweat, because these four elemental poets will work stages into
assembly lines of release, revolt, and redemption. These women do
not provide a clean slate they do however provide a dirty one worn
proudly.

Proud to Present…
Me Funny, Me Sexy!

By Drew Hayden Taylor
March 25, 2009
7:00pm-8:30pm
In the Nyumburu
Multipurpose Room
Pop culture
references a great Latin Lover, or French lover, why not also a
great Objibway or Naskapi lover?
Drew Hayden Taylor
is coming to campus to talk about Native American humor and
sexuality. When asked what the difference is between erotica by
natives and mainstream erotica, Drew fired back, no tan lines.
Originally from the
Curve Lake First Nations, in Central Ontario, Drew has spent the
last two decades traveling the world and writing about it from the
Aboriginal perspective. An award-winning playwright, author,
columnist, film maker and lecturer, he has managed to bridge the gap
between cultures by tickling the funny bone.
Drew travelled thru
130 native communities in Canada and the U.S. when he was
researching his last book, Me Funny and collected essays about humor
in Native life to show the other side of what it is to be Native.
There's going to be
a ton of laughs, FREE FOOD and we'll work in some education while
we're at it.
Hope to see you
there.

Lobby Day
- February 2nd @ 3pm
Come Join Pride Alliance and Equality Maryland on
February 2, 2009
4:00pm-9:00pm
for Maryland's Lobby Day
Here is your chance to voice your opinions against discrimination and fight for equality!
Transportation will NOT be provided in front of Stamp Student Union at 3:00!
Maryland remains one of the handfuls of states that has the opportunity to end marriage discrimination against same-sex couples in the near future. In 2008 The Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act was introduced with an impressive 49 cosponsors and lots of positive attention. We need to continue this momentum in 2009 by increasing the number of state legislators who sign on to cosponsor this landmark piece of legislation. They won't sign on unless they are asked, and the best people to ask are the voters who live in their district – that would be you!
We are also focusing on adding gender identity and expression to the state's non-discrimination laws. We need you to urge your legislator to pass this common-sense measure once and for all. Please think about giving these important issues a few hours of your time on Feb. 2, 2009 when Equality Maryland holds its annual Lobby Day in Annapolis. Be sure to register online before the day of the event, so please Register Today!
Once you sign up, the district coordinators will schedule your meetings with your elected officials, group you with other constituents in your district to accompany you on your visits, and provide you with legislators' voting records, talking points, and other important information before the date. Email mary [@] equalitymaryland.org with any questions.
Remember, you must register in order to speak with your elected official. If you are not a resident of Maryland, you are still welcomed to come and rally and show your pride!
We'll see you there! |
 |
-------------------------------
Note: Unfortunately, due to low interest, there will not be a bus. However, those interested should try their best to come.
The location is Lawyer's Mall, directly in front of the State House on 100 State Circle in Annapolis (Zip Code 21401).
The rally starts at 5:00, featuring guest speakers Bishop Gene Robinson, Kate Runyon from Equality MD, among others. Feel free to bring signs as long as they're not attached to sticks. Also, make sure you bring a photo ID if you plan on entering any buildings. Meetings with your lawmakers should be at 6:00, but District 21 (College Park) will not meet until around 8:30.
We hope all of those interested will come and support your rights. This is the year for change, but again change can't happen without YOU.
I hope to personally see everyone there.

Building Bridges Over Walls
- November 18th @ 7:00pm in QSA
Building Bridges Over Walls:
A QSA Special Presentation
On Tuesday, November 18th
7:00pm
in Tydings 1101
QSA will offer a special screening of…
Cruel & Unusual
Directed by Janet Baus, Dan Hunt, and Reid Williams
"Women, transgender women such as Ashley, Linda, Anna, Yolanda and Ophelia, are incarcerated in men's prisons across the U.S. from
Wyoming to New Jersey and Florida. Denied medical and psychological treatment, victims of rape and violence, the documentary Cruel and
Unusual asks if the punishment for their crime is indeed cruel and unusual?
Making its major festival premier at South by Southwest, Cruel and Unusual (2006, 66 minutes) is an unflinching documentary on the lives
of transgender women in men's prisons. Shot over three years, this high-definition documentary film challenges the viewer's basic ideas
about gender and justice through braids of poignantly graphic stories, vibrant landscape portraits and stark prison footage."
A brief discussion and a presentation from
Sadie Ryanne Baker of the Prisoner Correspondence Program will follow
Part of our week observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance.

There’s No Place Like Home
- November 17th @ 6:30pm

There’s No Place Like Home:
LGBT Youth and the Epidemic of Homelessness
|
According to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, "Of the
estimated 1.6 million homeless American youth, between 20 and 40
percent identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). Why
do LGBT youth become homeless? In one study, 26 percent of gay teens
who came out to their parents/guardians were told they must leave
home; LGBT youth also leave home due to physical, sexual and emotional
abuse. Homeless LGBT youth are more likely to: use drugs, participate
in sex work, and attempt suicide. Also, LGBT youth report they are
threatened, belittled and abused at shelters by staff as well as other
residents.”

"My family's story is not about
AIDS or homosexuality, but about what happens to all of us when a child
is denigrated, whether it is because of race, gender, sexual
orientation, size, or shape. The reason doesn't matter, but the damage
is the same. Anything that wounds the self-esteem of a child is the

This session is an opportunity for parents and students to explore "coming out" as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or questioning of their sexuality and gender. Led by university staff, we will examine campus climate and safety for LGBTQ students, resources available to parents to help and understand their students, as well as information for students to help them through the process. This is highly recommended to students looking to come out to their parents, students who have recently come out, and parents and students trying to find resources together.

These groups are to help better understand different communities with the greater LGBT community and discuss the "coming out process through unique cultural and religious perspectives.

"Mariachi to Merman. Sondheim to Cesar Chavez. Show tunes and canciones en español.
A remarkable life journey from East LA in the 50s to New York’s Great White Way in the 60s and 70s and back to Hollywood, moving from the back of the bus to the front of American pop culture.
A father/son relationship and a treasured boyhood friendship drive this 75-minute autobiographical play through decades of Chicano history and the gay experience from a unique and personal perspective.
Touching, hilarious and absolutely one-of-a-kind, Dan Guerrero finally brings his two fascinating worlds together in a riveting solo show."
Come and Enjoy the Show!
