Queer Music Riot: Katastrophe and Athens Boys Choir with Student Entertainment Events
- March 24th
Pride Alliance and Student Entertainment Events hosts as part of the
Queer Music Riot:
Katastrophe and Athens Boys Choir
as part of the F to eMbody Tour
Monday, March 24th, 2008
7:00 pm – 10:00pm
Prince George’s Room
Stamp Student Union
Open to the Public
Free Admission
Since 1985, the media has reported an average of one murder a month of a transgender person. Hatred often comes from ignorance and trans invisibility. This March, two transsexuals are headed your way offering performances and workshops to help faculty and students on University campuses understand this under-represented group of people and define a sense of solidarity and ally-ship with this community.
This event named "F to eMbody" will feature a multi-media Spoken-word and hip-hop performance by the Athens Boys Choir and Katastrophe. In addition, we will offer you a Trans 101 workshop that emphasizes how deeply individual the trans experience is and will cover everything from terminology to stories of personal experience.
---
“Katastrophe is an up-and-coming, genre-busting, emo-hop mc, whose stunning lyrical skills merge with beats that slide from slick to raw to solid to eccentric, creating a sonic otherworld that snags you in a dance-trance while teasing your head with rhymes that snap, pop and educate…Katastrophe occupies a singular place in the music underground — brainy and playful, defying genre, keeping listeners on their toes with lyrics that hook and beats that set you moving.”
“Ok, so the name Athens Boys Choir can be a bit deceiving but you can't blame a Transsexual man living in the Deep South for having a sense of humor about the whole ordeal. So Katz, the Choir's now solo member, travels the country speaking "the good word" throwing down hard hitting spoken-word that deals with issues of Gender, Politics, Love, Sex, and everything in-between…You don't have to be a spoken-word enthusiast to enjoy the lyrical stylings of the Athens Boys Choir...”

"Homotopia" Screening: A Screening by the TKRC Queer/ Violence Tour - March 7, 2008
Pride Alliance, Multiracial and Biracial Student Association, Student Global AIDS Campaign, and Terps for Choice
Present
Homotopia
A Screening by the TKRC Queer/ Violence Tour
Friday, March 7th, 2008
7:00pm
Prince George’s Room Stamp Student Union
Open to the Public - Free Admission
Set sometime in the future-present Homotopia chronicles a group of radical queer’s dedicated to exposing the trouble with gay marriage, dismantling the State, undoing Empire, while looking totally fierce.
Woven into the story of Yoshi's adventures in love, resistance, and sex, is a critique of the crushing violence of homonormativity and its deadly perpetuation of US patriotism, conservative kinship structures and affective accumulation
Homotopia holds cinematic assumptions hostage through its motley assemblage of never-passing crew. Race, gender, ability and desire are reworked through an anti-colonial take of queer struggle creating a visual rhythm of melancholic utopianism that knows there may be no future but still hopes today is not their last.
Love revolution, not State delusion, Homotopia.

The Shondes
Featuring The Male Gaze
Saturday, March 1st, 2008
8:00pm-11:00pm
WMUC Radio Station above the South Campus Diner
Open to the Public - Free Admission
"The Shondes (taking their name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace") are a rock quartet based in Brooklyn, New York, who make dramatic and powerful rock music, fusing elements of Classical and traditional Jewish music with their punk sensibility. Made up of drums (Temim Fruchter), bass (Louisa Solomon), guitar (Ian Brannigan), violin (Elijah Oberman), and powerful, intertwining vocals (Solomon, Fruchter, Oberman), they have been compared to Patti Smith and Sleater Kinney. The result is unique sound that is devastating, heartbreaking, and transcendent, transfixing audiences with the richness and passion of their songs.
The Shondes are known for their complex, melodic rock sound combined with soaring, rich vocals, and a live show that explodes with energy. Their instrumentation fuses the various musical traditions of Classical, Jewish, Queercore, and Feminist Punk, while their vocal melodies move effortlessly from anthemic to haunting, textured by the distinct qualities of voice." (http://www.shondes.com/home.html)
"The Male Gaze is so pervasive in advertising that it is assumed or taken-for-granted. Females are shown offering up their femininity FOR THE PLEASURE OF AN ABSENT MALE SPECTATOR."

This program is the second of a two part series addressing the topic of "men on the down low". It will seek to answer these questions: What is your perception/stereotype of men? How about men on the down low? What are the truths that underlie the myths of the brother on down low? Is there a correlation between down low men and HIV/AIDS? The Discussion will be lead by J.L. King, Author of “On the Down Low: A Journey into the Lives of 'Straight' Black Men Who Sleep with Men.” Also featuring a performance by Poet and Activist ButtaFlySoul from Russell Simmons’s HBO series, Def Poetry.
"Down Low" (DL) defined: men who traditionally identify as "straight" while having sex with other men—refusing to employ the standardized descriptors of sexual identity.

Come learn more about their lives, about trans issues on and off campus, and watch the Sundance documentary on transgender college students, TransGenerations. Also, if you are just stopping by between classes, please pick up one of our brochures on what it means to be transgender and what issues transpeople face. Whether playing native, tourist, or other, Chin questions our—as well as his own—assumptions, prejudices, and consumption of cultural beings and commodities. These works explore themes of sexuality, of Asian and of queer bodies, hybrid forms of culture, belonging, and the loss, recovery, and reconstruction of home, homeland, and history. These works are by turns coolly ironic, or bratty and comic, or poignant and mournful, or unbelievably borderline psychotic. |

The Female Orgasm - Sponsored with Terps for Choice and SEE - October 17, 2007
Sponsored by Terps for Choice, SEE and Pride Alliance
The Female Orgasm
Wednesday, October 17, 2007
7:30pm - 9:00pm
0130 Tydings Hall
Love Your Body Day
Sex educators Dorian Solot and Marshall Miller illuminate the subject of female orgasm for women who aren't having them, guys who want to make their girlfriends happy, and students who are debating the existence of the G-spot or "to fake or not to fake?" Dorian and Marshall are a couple, bringing both a male and female perspective to the conversation. And Dorian and Marshall know that people who are well-informed about sexual topics are more likely to make healthy decisions about the risks associated with sex. The program is inclusive of people of all genders and sexual orientations.
The Female Orgasm Program includes:
• An emphasis on individuals making sexual decisions that are right for them, including whether to use the information now or when married or in a serious relationship
• Analysis of the messages women receive about their bodies and sexuality from media, religion, families, and elsewhere.
• Body image, and the links between "befriending your body" and experiencing physical pleasure
• The value of learning how to say "no" to sex--and the problems college-age and adult women sometimes encounter when they realize that's all they ever learned
• An opportunity to talk openly in same-gender groups during part of the program
• Female anatomy
• Tips for partners about being patient and respectful
• The problems with pressure to have an orgasm, to orgasm faster, to have multiple orgasms, to orgasm with a partner, to fake or not fake orgasms
• Answers to the most common questions about orgasm
IT'S FREE! Invite your friends!
-----------------------------------
FUN FEMALE ORGASM FACTS
-----------------------------------
- Average length of time it takes a woman to have an orgasm: 20 minutes. Average length of time it takes a man: 2-5 minutes.
- Half of girls have had an orgasm by the time they're 16 years old.
- 44% of men say their female partners always have orgasms when they have sex. 22% of women say they always have orgasms when they have sex.
- About 1% of women are able to achieve orgasm solely through breast stimulation.
- 63% of college women say they've had multiple orgasms.
- The G-spot is named after Dr. Ernst Grafenberg, the first modern doctor to write about it.

LGBT Welcome Reception - September 10, 2007

Event: LGBT Welcome Reception for the 2007-2008 Academic Year
When: Monday, September 10th, 4:00pm-6:00 pm
Where: Prince Georges Room, Stamp Student Union
Our annual Welcome Reception is an opportunity for new and continuing students, staff and faculty, to become acquainted and reacquainted with one another, to learn about resources of particular interest to the LGBT campus community, and to enjoy each other's company getting to know one another. It is also the first major event where we invite people to sign either our Out List or Allies List which are published in the Diamondback on October 11, National Coming Out Day.
As before, there will be tables for resource providers to disseminate materials and information, and light refreshments. Also, we're planning an innovative approach to help everyone become more familiar with various campus events. You won't want to miss this!

Develop your Knowledge & Skills Around LGBT Issues! - http://www.umd.edu/lgbt/rainbow.html
Training Information:
Objectives:
This is a six-hour (offered in two 3 hour segments) training that will develop and enhance your skills in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other sexual minority students, staff, and faculty on campus.
As most of us know who work with students directly or indirectly, it is crucial to find ways to increase our own knowledge-base and skills so we can find more effective and powerful ways to create a more inclusive, open, and positive campus community for all of us regardless of our own sexual orientation. It has also become increasingly important that we learn these skills to help us cultivate a more open working environment for all of ourselves and our colleagues.
The training is intended for both LGBT identified and non-LGBT identified staff, faculty, and students.
Content:
The training is presented in two parts. Part ONE provides information on LGBT people & culture, LGBT identity development models and theories, and analyses intersections of sexuality with race, ethnicity, nationality, class, gender, age, and ability. Part TWO gives participants an opportunity to evaluate their own readiness as allies, looks at coming out issues commonly faced by students, informs participants about available LGBT University and other resources, and through role play offers an opportunity to enhance their skills as allies.
At the close of the training you will be offered the opportunity to join the Rainbow Terrapin Network, a network of people committed to serving as allies on campus.
Logistics:
We'd very much like for you to take the training with us. Please contact me Sivagami Subbaraman or 301.405. 8498. Please include your name, campus affiliation, email address & phone number; please indicate clearly which training sessions you are interested in. We suggest that you take both parts of the training in sequence to enhance the experience.
